northern hills

The northern Black Hills are distinctly different from the southern Black Hills, with steeper hills and a greater influx of deciduous trees.

The rock is also completely different; the granite spires of the southern hills are replaced by sheer limestone cliffs.

Spearfish Canyon is a beautiful drive following Spearfish Creek from Cheyenne Crossing to the town of Spearfish.  The canyon is home to several waterfalls and lots of wonderful hikes and picnic spots.

  • The tour begins by driving through the lush valleys on Nemo road to the scenic Highway 385.
  • Upon reaching the end of 385 in Lead/Deadwood, we turn east towards Wyoming to Cheyenne Crossing.  Cheyenne Crossing is the entrance to one of the most scenic drives in South Dakota through Spearfish Canyon (a National Scenic Byway), with stops at Bridal Vail Falls and Roughlock Falls.
  •  The road follows Spearfish Creek up to the laid-back town of Spearfish.
  • From here you have the option of a quick return via I90, a stop at Crow Peak Brewery for a quick pint or a few hours of gambling in the nearby, historic town of Deadwood.
